John J. Cone
John J. Cone was the fourth Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus from 1898 to 1899 and Fire Commissioner of Jersey City, New Jersey.〔New York Times, "Reappraisements of Imports"〕
Cone was a founding member of Jersey City Council #137 of the Knights of Columbus on November 3, 1895.〔The Knights of Columbus in War and Peace, Volume One, 1920, page 69.〕 In less than three years was elected Supreme Knight〔(125 Years in Review )〕 after Supreme Knight Hayes died suddenly frlom complications from peritonitis.〔(The Order's History )〕
During Cone’s time in charge, the Knights subscribe to war bonds in order to support the Spanish-American War. He also directed that soldiers and sailors were not to be disqualified from being insurance members.〔(125 Years in Review )〕 By the end of his time as Supreme Knight the order had reached as far West as the state of Minnesota.〔(The Order's History )〕
Cone died at his home in January 1937 He was 79 years old.〔New York Times, "JOHN J. CONE DIES; K. OF C. EX-LEADER; Supreme Grand Knight of the Order in United States From 1896 to 1900." page 21.〕
